Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair one’s self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
To correct this condition, patients will undergo Gynecomastia surgery to reduce their breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. The procedure, known as reduction mammaplasty, addresses enlarged or drooping male breasts. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.
Best-suited candidates
Ideal candidates are patients who want to get rid of enlarged or drooping male breasts. The best candidates have already tried non-surgical solutions and have found them to be ineffective. It is important to be in good overall health and, ideally, a non-smoker to ensure a smooth recovery process.
Procedure details
Dr. Rau will employ one technique or a combination of techniques for your male breast reduction procedure. Liposuction and/or tissue excision are commonly used during surgery. Liposuction uses a thin tube inserted through the skin to remove excess fat from the breasts. If glandular tissue and/or sagging skin have to be removed, tissue excision will be done. Excision is the removal of tissue using a scalpel. The location and length of the incision depend on the extent of the surgery. Usually, it is made around the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) or within the natural crease of the breast to make it less visible. After the desired amount of tissue has been removed, the incisions will be closed with stitches.
Recovery and healing
You will require some downtime and recovery after your surgical procedure. Pain, bruising, and swelling may be experienced. To help with the discomfort, pain medication may be taken. A compression garment will be recommended for faster healing. Depending on your body’s natural ability to heal, you may be able to return to normal activities after several days. Avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects for several weeks.
